We all have certain expectations for holidays. The fall holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas) seem to revolve around family and traditions. With many family members scattered around the country (if not the world), some years it is almost impossible to have everyone together. We also want the perfect holiday. We want the perfect cookies, the same foods served every year (the horror of it all if someone does not bring the green bean casserole or wilted salad) and gifts brightly wrapped and enthusiastically welcomed. That might stem from remembrances of innocent childhood experiences or an expectation of perfect family relationships. Many times these expectations bring on stress. For many years our traditions were that there were no traditions. The year we were stranded on the turnpike and had the Christmas Eve traditional dinner of Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup when we finally arrived home or the Christmas Eve dinner at McDonalds after leaving the hospital in the late evening are a few examples. We also split the holiday with the two families and in addition alternated homes visited and it usually involved 2 cities on one side of the family and at least three on the other side. We never had the same Christmas Eve or Christmas Day for the longest time. For my part I felt that this was ok.
