Lights in December help illuminate the night. It serves as a wonderful transition from the daylight hours as seen in the fall to the early dark nights of winter. Lights on Christmas trees began in the middle of the 17th century when small candles were used in Christmas trees. In 1882 in New York City, the first indoor Christmas tree was lit with electric lights. Edward Johnson (an inventor who worked for Thomas Edison) is credited with this achievement. There were some early instances where lights were used outdoors but the credit is given to the town of McAdenville North Carolina in 1956. Nowadays there are lights everywhere.
